Local 2068 Health & Safety

Fire fighter occupational cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty death in the fire service.

At the 2023 IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial, 63% of the names added to the wall were members who had died from occupational cancer.

In partnership with the Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN), the IAFF has designated January as Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month to provide fire fighters the necessary tools and guidance to develop life-saving protocols for cancer prevention and to support those with a cancer diagnosis within their departments.

The #911SAVESACT Bill is on the move!
Today it was "finally" (after many years) brought up for a markup vote in committee. Favorably passed - vote was 42-0! Now goes to the full House floor, for a vote! Thank you Congresswoman Norma Torres!

Our public testimony at yesterday’s FY25 public hearing - PART 2

Cross Staffing 3 of 6 tankers = 👎🏻

Reducing staffing for HMU & HMSU = 👎🏻

Reducing the # of 24hr Safety Officers = 👎🏻

Civilianizing 3 key Batt Chief roles = 👎🏻

🚒 Not All Fire Trucks Are the Same! 🚒

Ever wonder what the difference is between Fire Engines and Ladder Trucks? Here’s a quick breakdown:

🔥 Fire Engines:

• Staffed by 4 personnel: 1 Apparatus Technician, 1 Officer, 1 Firefighter Paramedic, and 1 Firefighter/EMT-B.

• Carry 650-750 gallons of water.

• Equipped with hose lines of varying lengths and sizes.

• Includes a 14’ ground ladder, a 24’ ground ladder, and a 10’ attic ladder.

• Main role: Establish water supply, deploy attack lines, and extinguish fires. They also respond to EMS calls, vehicle accidents, and other emergencies.

🚨 Ladder Trucks:

• Staffed by 4 personnel: 1 Apparatus Technician, 1 Officer, 1 Firefighter Paramedic, and 1 Firefighter/EMT-B.

• Different types include rear-mount, mid-mount towers, and tiller trucks.

• Equipped with large aerial ladders, typically 95’-110’.

• Includes ground ladders ranging from 16’ to 35’.

• Main role: Search and rescue, forcible entry, ventilation, laddering, and salvage/overhaul. They also assist with EMS calls and vehicle accidents when engines are unavailable or farther away.

💡 Whether it’s a fire or other emergencies, both play a vital role in keeping our community safe! #FireSafety #iaff #Local2068 #FireEngines #LadderTrucks #fairfaxImage attachmentImage attachment+1Image attachment
