Fire fighter occupational cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty death in the fire service.
At the 2023 IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial, 63% of the names added to the wall were members who had died from occupational cancer.
In partnership with the Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN), the IAFF has designated January as Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month to provide fire fighters the necessary tools and guidance to develop life-saving protocols for cancer prevention and to support those with a cancer diagnosis within their departments.
𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀! ** 𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘀 are slated for elimination in the FY26 Advertised budget**Last week, units from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue responded to a critical emergency, a patient suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen with significant blood loss. Every second counted.𝗔𝗺𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟰𝟭𝟲 (𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗼𝗻), Engine 416 (Clifton), Medic 417 (Centreville), EMS Supervisor 403, and Battalion Chief 407 were dispatched. Upon arrival, crews determined the patient’s condition was too severe to wait for Medic 417 (Centreville), which was coming from a farther distance. Without hesitation, the Firefighter/Paramedic from Engine 416 (Clifton) upgraded 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟰𝟭𝟲 (𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗼𝗻), and the crew immediately transported the patient to the hospital, ensuring they received the life-saving care they needed without delay.Had this emergency occurred after July 1, under the proposed FY26 Advertised Budget, the outcome could have been tragically different. The elimination of critical EMS resources means longer response times, seconds and minutes that can be the difference between life and death. As emergency calls increase across the County, now is NOT the time to cut life-saving EMS units. Public safety must remain a top priority.📢 Take Action! Share this with your family, friends, and neighbors. 𝗨𝗥𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗧: 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝘆 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 We stand with the over 10,000 career firefighters, emergency medical providers, and 911 tele-communicators of the Virginia Professional Fire Fighters, in overwhelming disappointment at the abrupt closure of the National Fire Academy (NFA) in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The NFA is a world-class institution that provides top-tier education to fire service leaders nationwide. It serves as a hub for training, collaboration, and strategic planning for emergency response agencies across the country and beyond. Its programs, both on-campus and off-campus, are critical to the safety of firefighters and the communities we serve. We urge our members and supporters to contact their federal representatives and demand action to reopen the National Fire Academy. They are absolutely right. Call volume for Fairfax County Fire and Rescue is up 26% since 2017. Now is NOT the time to continue to chip away at critical resources. Cutting Fire Department services only increases the burden on the remaining units and jeopardizes the safety of our residents and visitors.Let's stand up for the safety of our community! 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗲 𝗖𝘂𝘁𝘀 𝗣𝘂𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 Fairfax County’s proposed FY26 budget cuts will eliminate FOUR ambulances, leaving entire communities waiting for critical EMS services. This means fewer ambulances on the street, longer wait times, and delayed transport to definitive medical care during life-threatening emergencies. The proposed closures include:Ambulance 416 (𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗼𝗻)Ambulance 420 (𝗚𝘂𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻)Ambulance 441 (𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲 / 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗳𝗮𝘅 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻)Medic 439 (𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 / 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻)These cuts put lives at risk, and we can't allow that to happen. Our community deserves fast, reliable emergency medical response, not budget cuts that endanger public safety.Contact the Board of Supervisors TODAY and demand they restore funding to protect public safety.Share this with your family, friends, and neighbors, and let's make sure Public Safety stays a top priority for Fairfax County.#FairfaxCounty #local2068 #FCFRD #SaveOurAmbulances #cliftonva #gunstonva#fairfaxstationva #herndonva ... 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐕𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐬 **𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐝 Units are proposed for Elimination in theFY26 Advertised Budget.**Earlier this evening, our members were dispatched to a multi-vehicle collision with reports of multiple patients trapped. Upon arrival, crews encountered several injured patients — including two still trapped in one of the vehicles after a T-bone collision. One of the trapped patients was able to self-extricate, while the second required a full vehicle extrication by 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞 𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐝 𝟒𝟏𝟗 (𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐧). Upon arrival, Rescue squad 419 quickly went to work to remove the patient so they could be transferred to EMS units on scene and transported to the hospital for further evaluation.Had this call occurred after July 1, 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞 𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐝 𝟒𝟏𝟗 (𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐧) would no longer exist due to the proposed FY26 Advertised Budget cuts. This would have resulted in longer wait times for critical rescue services, leaving the trapped patient in the vehicle for a significantly longer period of time, a delay that could mean the difference between life and death. In addition, 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟰𝟰𝟭 (𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲), which normally serves this area, was already on another call. This meant Ambulance 427 (West Springfield) had to respond, further increasing patient wait times on the side of the road after the collison. The proposed budget calls for the elimination of FOUR ambulances, meaning delays like this will become a regular occurrence across Clifton, Gunston, Crosspointe (Fairfax Station), North Point (Herndon), and beyond. These cuts will create a domino effect, impacting response times across the entire County. This is not a hypothetical scenario, it’s a real-life example of why FULLY FUNDING Fire and Rescue services is critical for the safety of Fairfax County residents and visitors. Every second counts in emergencies, and these proposed cuts will directly result in longer wait times, fewer available units, and delayed patient care.Responding Units:Engines: Engine 441 (Crosspointe)Ladder Trucks: Truck 441 (Crosspointe)Rescue Squads: 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞 𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐝 𝟒𝟏𝟗 (𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐧)EMS Units: Medic 435 (Pohick), Ambulance 427 (West Springfield), Medic 419 (Lorton), EMS Supervisor 405Incident Command: Battalion Chief 405, Safety Officer 402This is unacceptable. Public safety must remain a TOP PRIORITY. We need your voice to stop these dangerous cuts.Take action now: Contact the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and demand they restore funding for 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟰𝟭𝟲 (𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗼𝗻), 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟰𝟮𝟬 (𝗚𝘂𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻), 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟰𝟰𝟭 (𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲), 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰 𝟰𝟯𝟵 and keep critical rescue services like 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞 𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐝 𝟒𝟏𝟗 (𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐧) in service. Lives depend on it.Share this post with your friends, family, and neighbors, help spread the word. Every second counts in an emergency, and these proposed cuts put everyone at risk.#Local2068 #FCFRD #fairfaxcounty #cliftonva #gunstonva #fairfaxstationva #herndonva #IAFF ... See MoreSee Less

First-arriving crews encountered significant fire conditions rapidly spreading throughout the home. Our members quickly initiated an aggressive attack to knock down the fire while ensuring all occupants had evacuated safely. Due to conditions, a second alarm was requested. Crews worked diligently to extinguish the fire, address hot spots, and conduct salvage and overhaul operations.𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝟒𝟒𝟏 (𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞) and additional EMS units transported five civilians to local hospitals. Two firefighters were also transported with minor injuries. Fire investigators remain on scene working to determine the cause. This incident underscores the grave risk of eliminating EMS units in our community. When emergencies happen, the ability to provide immediate medical care and transport multiple patients can mean the difference between life and death.Due to other calls, maintenance, and extenuating circumstances, many Fairfax County EMS units in this area were unavailable, forcing patients to wait for EMS units from Prince William County. If the proposed FY26 budgett cuts move forward, these dangerous delays will become routine, putting Fairfax County residents and visitors at even greater risk.Responding Units:Engines: Engine 441 (Crosspointe), Engine 435 (Pohick), Engine 427 (West Springfield), Engine 440 (Fairfax Center), Engine 414 (Burke), Engine 420 (Gunston)Ladder Trucks: Truck 441 (Crosspointe), Truck 422 (Springfield)Rescue Squads: 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞 𝟒𝟐𝟏 (𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐎𝐚𝐤𝐬),Rescue 414 (Burke)EMS Units: 𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝟒𝟒𝟏 (𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞)Medic 435 (Pohick), EMS Supervisor 406, EMS Supervisor 404, EMS Supervisor 401Incident Command: Battalion Chief 405, Battalion Chief 407, Battalion Chief 408, Safety Officer 402, Deputy Chief 402Support Units: Light & Air 423, Public Information Officer 401🔍 Investigators: Investigator 10, Investigator 12, Investigator 14Thank you to all of our 911 tele-communicators, firefighters and paramedics for their dedication and hard work.
